What ShelfAware collects

ShelfAware (the website at shelfaware.ca and the browser extension) collects the minimum data needed to check nearby store prices and stock.

  • Search queries. The retailer and product ID you look up are logged anonymously to power the "Trending Items" feed. No personally identifiable information is attached to anonymous searches.
  • Your location (latitude/longitude or postal code) is sent to our API to find nearby stores. It is not stored on our servers beyond the duration of a single scan request.
  • If you create an account (email/Google sign-in), we store your email address, display name, and profile photo URL via Firebase Authentication so we can send you price-drop alerts.
  • Your price alert preferences, target price, chosen location, and the product you are watching, are stored so we can notify you when the price drops.

Browser extension: local storage

The ShelfAware Chrome extension stores your most recently used location (latitude, longitude, postal code, and label) in your browser's local extension storage (chrome.storage.local) for up to 24 hours so you don't have to re-enter it each time you open the overlay. This data never leaves your device except as part of a scan request to our API.

The extension does not collect your browsing history, track which pages you visit, or send any data to third parties.

How we use your data

  • To return nearby store prices and stock availability for the product you searched.
  • To show trending products searched by all users (anonymous, aggregated).
  • To send price-drop email notifications when you have an active price alert.
  • To improve ShelfAware: we review aggregate search patterns to decide which retailers and features to add next.

We do not sell your data to third parties.

Third-party services

  • Firebase Authentication (Google) handles sign-in securely.
  • Brevo sends transactional price-alert emails.
  • Google Maps / Geocoding API converts addresses to coordinates (extension only).
  • Cloudflare hosts the site and protects against bots via Turnstile.

Data retention

Anonymous search events are deleted after 10 days. Price history is kept indefinitely to power price charts. Account data and price alerts are retained until you delete your account or cancel the alert.

Your rights

You can delete your price alerts at any time from the ShelfAware dashboard. To request deletion of your account and all associated data, email privacy@shelfaware.ca.
