Ten categories where Canadian clearance and resale demand overlap, with which chains clear each one and whether they price by store or nationally.
A category is a place to look, not a margin
None of these categories makes money by default. They're where clearance markdowns and resale demand overlap often enough to be worth watching. Whether a particular item pays depends on the price at a store you can reach today, how that price compares to the item's own history, and what it's actually selling for second-hand right now.
Where we know which Canadian chains clear a category, and how they price it, it's noted below. That second part matters more than it sounds. A chain with one national price gives you no gap between stores to work with. A chain that prices store by store can.
1. Sealed LEGO sets
Retired sets often hold their value, and markdowns on discontinued sets are a common way in. Confirm the set is actually retired, not just out of stock for a few weeks, before you buy to hold.
2. Small kitchen appliances
They turn over quickly and get cleared after the holidays, and there's steady resale demand. Margins are thin, so the buy price has to be genuinely low. A tag that only looks discounted won't cover them.
Where it clears: Canadian Tire marks them down when a model is discontinued or a store has too many, and its prices vary by store, so compare locations before you buy.
3. Power tools
Brand-name cordless tools hold resale value well when the battery and charger are included. Discontinued lines and open-box units are where the buy price drops.
Where it clears: Canadian Tire and Home Depot. Both price clearance store by store, so the same tool can be cheaper a few kilometres away.
4. Board games and puzzles
Popular titles get discontinued or reprinted with new covers, and the old edition can clear out cheap while still selling for close to its original price second-hand.
Where it clears: Walmart clears toys and games after the holidays, at prices set by province.
5. Video game hardware and accessories
Controllers, memory cards, and older consoles get marked down when a new generation launches, while demand for the older hardware can hold steady for a while.
Where it clears: Best Buy, at one national price. No store will be cheaper than another, so any margin comes from timing alone.
6. Seasonal decor
Halloween, Christmas, and patio decor sells out in season and clears hard afterward. The margin is in buying at the post-season low and holding until demand comes back next year, which ties up cash and storage space.
Where it clears: Canadian Tire clears holiday decor in January and patio gear once summer ends. Home Depot clears overstocked patio sets and holiday decor too.
7. Fitness equipment
Bulky items are costly for a retailer to keep as overstock, so markdowns can be steep. Resale demand is seasonal, so the timing of the sale matters as much as the buy.
Where it clears: Sport Chek, at one national price. Check whether it's tagged Final Sale: you can't return it if it doesn't resell.
8. Name-brand cookware
Open-box and floor-model cookware from recognizable brands clears regularly at big-box stores, and known brands resell more reliably than generic ones.
9. Baby gear
Strollers, car seats, and carriers get real markdowns on discontinued colours or model years, and plenty of parents shop second-hand. Check the expiry date on car seats before buying any to resell.
10. Home improvement fixtures
Discontinued tile, lighting, and hardware lines clear at steep discounts when a store resets a range. Buyers are mostly people in the middle of a specific renovation, so demand is narrow, but margins can be large.
Where it clears: Home Depot, Home Hardware, and RONA. All three can price differently from store to store: manager discretion at Home Depot, dealer-owned stores at Home Hardware, and the RONA and RONA+ banners at RONA.
